written for a particular gain. Then KGH = −1 so that a) when the amplitude of KGH is 1 or 0 dB and b) phase is 180o then we have the system just become unstable. Both the conditions have to be fulfilled. Hence, if we ask the question: How far is the system from instability ? We get two answers. The gain increment required at the frequency where phase is 180o and the phase increment required at the frequency where amplitude is 0 dB. The frequency where phase crosses 180o is called the phase crossover and the frequency where the amplitude crosses the 0dB point is called the gain crossover. Let us look at the nyquist plot for

Tuning of Lead Compensators with Gain and Phase Margin Specifications

For a servo plant with an integrator, analytical tuning formulas for phase lead compensators with both gain and phase margin specifications are derived in this paper. Comparing with other tuning methods, this method is simple with a short tuning time. Simulation results under two typical cases show that this method is general, too. Copyright c ©2005 IFAC

Analytical and Graphical Design of PID Compensators on the Nyquist plane

This paper focuses on the design of PID compensator to exactly satisfy the gain margin, the phase margin and the gain or phase crossover frequency specifications. The design problem is numerically solved using the so called PID inversion formulae method. A graphical interpretation of the solution on the Nyquist plane is presented. This could be suitable on education environment to deeply unders...

Auto-tuning of Fractional Lead-lag Compensators

In this paper, a method for auto-tuning of a fractional order leadlag compensator using relay feedback tests is proposed. A design method for this kind of compensators is discussed, based on the magnitude and phase measurement of the plant to be controlled from relay feedback tests at a frequency of interest. Simple relationships among the parameters of this fractional controller are establishe...

Notes on Frequency Methods: Gain Margin Phase Margin, Delays, and the Nyquist Map

Using frequency methods, it is possible to determine a great deal of information from the open-loop transfer function. One of the most important facts about a given system which may be determined via frequency methods is the relative stability of the system. There are two principal measures of system stability determined via frequency methods: Gain Margin, and Phase Margin. These two measures m...

Bode Plots of First and Second Order Systems

The objective of this lecture is to provide you with some background on the use of transfer functions to perform the so-called frequency response analysis of dynamic systems, also known as analysis based on Bode plots. This method will be later used in the design of control systems.
